THRIVE son las siglas de Transnasal Humidified Rapid-Insufflation Ventilatory Exchange (intercambio ventilatorio de insuflaci\u00f3n r\u00e1pida de ox\u00edgeno humidificado transnasal) y fueron acu\u00f1adas por primera vez en el Reino Unido por Patel y Nouraei durante un estudio realizado por ambos entre 2013 y 2014 [<a href=\"https:\/\/associationofanaesthetists-publications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/anae.12923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1<\/a>]. Como su nombre indica, la t\u00e9cnica se administra al paciente a trav\u00e9s de las fosas nasales (transnasal) mediante un equipo especializado. THRIVE utiliza gases ricos en ox\u00edgeno, que han sido calentados, a los que se ha a\u00f1adido vapor de agua para \u00abacondicionarlos de forma \u00f3ptima\u00bb (humidificados) y que se insuflan en las v\u00edas respiratorias superiores a caudales mayores de 45 L\/pm (insuflaci\u00f3n r\u00e1pida). Estos gases humidificados se utilizan para oxigenar al paciente durante la apnea que sigue a la inducci\u00f3n de la anestesia (intercambio ventilatorio).<\/p><p>Los altos flujos de gas respiratorio, utilizados originalmente en las salas de cuidados intensivos, a una FiO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0prescrita y establecida, han demostrado ser \u00fatiles en el tratamiento de pacientes con hipoxemia. Este equipo f\u00e1cil de colocar y manipular [im\u00e1genes 1 y 2] ha supuesto un avance en el tratamiento de pacientes con insuficiencia respiratoria de tipo 1, salvando las distancias entre las terapias de ox\u00edgeno de bajo flujo y CPAP, y se conoce ampliamente como oxigenoterapia de alto flujo (OAF) [<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00134-019-05590-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2<\/a>]. As\u00ed pues, el desarrollo de la t\u00e9cnica THRIVE, que utiliza OAF, ha allanado el camino para la diversificaci\u00f3n de esta terapia en departamentos hospitalarios alternativos.
